Drug effects on MIBG Uptake

Drug - Opioids

  • Cocaine, Tramadol

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Uptake inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 7-14 days

 

 

Drug - Tricyclic antidepressants

  • Amitriptyline and derivates, imipramine and derivates, amoxapine, loxapine, doxepine, others…

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Uptake inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 7-21 days

 

 

Drug - Sympathicomimetics*

  • Phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, phenilephrine,amphetamine, dopamine, isoproterenol, salbutamol, terbutaline, phenoterol, xylometazoline

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Depletion of granules

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 7-14 days

 

 

Drug - Antihypertensive/cardiovascular agents

  • Labetalol, metoprolol, amiodarone

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Inhibition uptake and depletion

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 21 days

 

  • Reserpine

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Depletion and transport inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 14 days

 

  • Bretylium, guanethidine

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Depletion and transport inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 14 days

 

  • Calcium channel blockers: niphepidine, nicardipine, amlodipine

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Increased uptake and retention

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 14 days

 

 

Drug - ACE inhibitors

  • Captopril, Enalapril

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Increased uptake and retention

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 14 days

 

 

Drug - Antipsychotics

  • Phenothiazines° (chlorpromazine, promethazine, fluphenazine, others)

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Uptake inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 21-28 days

 

  • Thioxanthenes (maprotiline, trazolone)

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Uptake inhibition

  • Suggested withdrawal prior to MIBG scintigraphy: 21-28 days

 

  • Butyrophenones (droperidol, haloperidol)

  • Mechanism of interference (known or expected): Uptake inhibition
